Senate order on the reporting of departmental contracts - The Murray Motion

The Office of the Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) is a new statutory entity established under the Machinery of Government changes (MoG) of 1 July 2009. As a result of those changes the FWO took on the roles of the Workplace Ombudsman and the general advisory functions of the Workplace Authority.

The amended Senate Order of 26 June 2003 calls on Australian Government departments and agencies to publish a list of contracts for services costing more than $100,000 that either haven't been completed or have been entered into during the previous 12 months. The following information must be given:

  • the contractor, the amount of the contract and the subject matter of the contract
  • the start date and the time the contract will take to complete
  • the relevant reporting period and the 12-month period relating to the contract listings
  • whether each contract calls on parties to keep provisions confidential, or whether there are any other confidentiality requirements
  • a statement explaining reasons for confidentiality
  • an estimate of the cost of complying with this order and a statement of the method used to make the estimate.

The most recent Murray Motion report covers the period 1 July 2009 to 30 June 2010.

Shared Industry Assistance Projects

Select employer and industry organisations have been invited to apply for a grant of up to $104,000 under the Shared Industry Assistance Projects (SIAP). Grants from this program will be used to develop modern award guidance material in partnership with the Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO).

Funding for SIAP has been allocated to the FWO in the 2010 – 2011 Budget and will be used to facilitate a targeted education and information program for business on changes to the modern awards commonly used in their industry.

Applications from invited participants close on 15 June 2010.
